Evonik Industries AG (XETRA: EVK; Essen Germany; MDAX listed); world's largest DL-methionine producer under the MetAMINO brand. Total DL-methionine capacity exceeds 700,000 MT/year across three continental hubs: Jurong Island Singapore (~340,000 MT/year — world's largest single methionine complex, expanded +40k MT August 2024), Theodore Mobile County Alabama USA (~245,000 MT/year), and Antwerp Belgium (~120,000 MT/year). The Wesseling Germany DL-Met line closed Q1 2021 as Evonik consolidated production to the three-hub network. Evonik first commercialized DL-methionine synthesis in the 1950s under predecessor Degussa. MetAMINO is Evonik's largest single product. ~30-32% global market share. In February 2022 Evonik announced a $176.5M investment in a new methyl mercaptan (MMP intermediate feedstock) plant at the Alabama site.

Evonik Jurong Island DL-Methionine Complex

SG

Jurong Island, Singapore · DL-methionine production

World's largest single DL-methionine facility; 340,000 MT/year capacity (expanded 2024 from 300,000 MT/year). Sole production site for Evonik's global MetAMINO® brand methionine. A disruption to this island facility would immediately affect 30-35% of global methionine supply.

Evonik Marl Chemical Park (Methyl Mercaptan / THT)

DE

North Rhine-Westphalia · manufacturing

Evonik's Marl Chemical Park (Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia) is Germany's primary production site for methyl mercaptan and tetrahydrothiophene (THT). Marl is one of Europe's largest integrated chemical parks; Evonik produces methyl mercaptan primarily as a precursor to DL-methionine (an essential amino acid in animal feed) and as a thiochemical feedstock. THT produced at Marl is the primary gas odorant for German and Dutch gas networks (Deutsche Gas / Gasunie), representing the European alternative to the North American TBM standard. Evonik MetAMINO Singapore (Jurong Island)

SG

Jurong Island, Singapore · chemical_plant

World's largest single DL-methionine production complex at ~340,000 MT/year (after August 2024 +40k MT expansion); Evonik's Asia-Pacific methionine hub on restricted-access petrochemical Jurong Island. Feeds broiler, layer, aquaculture, and pet food markets across APAC. Approximately 16-17% of all global DL-methionine capacity in one facility. Evonik Industries — the world's largest DL-methionine producer for chicken feed — is also the primary supplier of fumed silica (AEROSIL brand, ~45% global market share) used as the abrasive in CMP (chemical-mechanical planarization) slurry that polishes silicon wafers at semiconductor fabs. Every advanced chip made at TSMC, Samsung, Intel, or Micron is polished between deposition steps using slurry containing Evonik fumed silica. The same fumed silica is also the primary anti-caking agent in pharmaceutical tablets and the thickener in construction adhesives and sealants. A German company that makes chicken feed supplements from coal-era chemistry also provides the abrasive material that defines wafer surface quality for leading-edge semiconductors — four entirely separate supply chains (food/feed, pharma, construction, semiconductors) depending on the same product from the same Evonik silica plants.

Evonik's expanded Singapore MetAMINO facility, completed in 2024, is the world's largest single methionine production site at 340,000 MT/yr. Combined with Adisseo's Nanjing operations (~350,000 MT/yr), two single-city industrial sites in Singapore and China together account for an estimated ~40–50% of global methionine production capacity — concentrating the supply chain for the rate-limiting amino acid in all global poultry production into two Asian urban locations.

  • Origin2023

Evonik Industries was formed from Degussa AG (German specialty chemicals, founded 1843) and RAG AG (German coal mining conglomerate). In 2007, RAG spun off the chemicals business as Evonik. The 2016 acquisition of Air Products and Chemicals' performance materials division for $3.8B brought Evonik the specialty lipids and surfactant business — including the lipid chemistry capability that would later be critical for mRNA vaccine manufacturing. Evonik's methionine leadership traces to Degussa, which first commercialized industrial DL-methionine synthesis in the 1950s using the methyl mercaptan route. Today Evonik's DL-methionine dominance and mRNA lipid capability come from the same integrated chemical heritage — yet serve completely unrelated food and biotech supply chains.
