Evonik Industries was formed from Degussa AG (German specialty chemicals, founded 1843) and RAG AG (German coal mining conglomerate). In 2007, RAG spun off the chemicals business as Evonik. The 2016 acquisition of Air Products and Chemicals' performance materials division for $3.8B brought Evonik the specialty lipids and surfactant business — including the lipid chemistry capability that would later be critical for mRNA vaccine manufacturing.
