LYBHQ NL · Rotterdamwebsite ↗

LyondellBasell Industries N.V. (Rotterdam Netherlands; NYSE: LYB; ~$40B revenue; world's largest polyolefin producer by volume) produces meltblown-grade PP resins under its Moplen and Adflex brand families. LyondellBasell's Spheripol and Spherizone PP polymerization technologies enable production of specialty high-MFR grades with controlled molecular weight distribution for meltblown fiber production. LyondellBasell's Channelview TX, La Porte TX, and Rotterdam Netherlands PP plants are primary meltblown-grade production sites. LyondellBasell also produces metallocene-catalyzed PP grades (Metocene series) that compete with Ziegler-Natta-based meltblown resins by offering tighter molecular weight control. LyondellBasell holds an estimated 18-22% of global meltblown PP resin supply and is the most geographically diversified meltblown PP producer, with production across the US, Netherlands, Germany, and Italy.

Texas · manufacturing

LyondellBasell's Channelview TX complex (Harris County; ~3,000 employees; formerly Lyondell Chemical) operates world-scale PP polymerization units producing both standard and specialty high-MFR grades for meltblown applications. Channelview uses Spherizone multi-zone reactor technology enabling production of specialty PP with controlled molecular weight distribution — critical for meltblown fiber formation. The complex is located on the Houston Ship Channel, 15 miles from ExxonMobil's Baytown complex, in the world's most concentrated petrochemical production zone. LyondellBasell Maasvlakte / Rotterdam PP Plant

NL

South Holland · manufacturing

LyondellBasell's Rotterdam Netherlands PP complex (Botlek / Maasvlakte; Port of Rotterdam; ~2,500 employees) is the company's primary European PP production hub and the largest single-site PP facility in Europe. The Rotterdam plant produces Moplen specialty PP grades including high-MFR meltblown-grade resins for European nonwoven and filtration manufacturers. Port of Rotterdam location enables direct import of Middle East and US propylene feedstock. European meltblown PP supply for N95 mask production (Germany, France, Italy, Spain) runs predominantly through this facility. • Chokepoint2023

LyondellBasell produces polypropylene for N95 mask meltblown filters AND propylene oxide for the polyurethane foam in mattresses and furniture AND isopropyl alcohol for hand sanitizers and pharmaceutical manufacturing, all from the same propylene cracker infrastructure in Channelview, Texas and La Porte, Texas. When COVID drove simultaneous spikes in N95 demand (meltblown PP), hand sanitizer demand (IPA), and home furnishing demand (propylene oxide for foam), LyondellBasell's Gulf Coast crackers were running at maximum capacity with allocation battles across all three end markets. A single petrochemical complex was the upstream constraint for the anti-pandemic supply chain (masks, sanitizer) AND the nesting/WFH surge that accelerated furniture demand simultaneously.

  • Did you know2023

LyondellBasell licenses its Spheripol polypropylene polymerization technology to petrochemical companies globally -- including to Chinese PP plants that now compete directly with LyondellBasell on commodity PP resin price. Over 40 commercial PP plants worldwide operate Spheripol technology under LyondellBasell licenses, including several in China that produce the same meltblown-grade PP that LyondellBasell sells into US and European markets. LyondellBasell's technology licensing division collects royalties and engineering fees from its own competitive displacement: the Chinese PP overcapacity that has compressed global PP margins since 2021 was partly built on Spheripol technology whose process economics LyondellBasell itself defined. Technology licensor and commodity producer are the same company, in direct tension.

  • Origin2023

LyondellBasell was created by the 2007 merger of Basell Polyolefins (a Shell/BASF joint venture) and Lyondell Chemical, financed by a $12.7 billion leveraged buyout at the peak of the credit bubble by Len Blavatnik's Access Industries. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, the combined company's debt load became untenable and it filed for bankruptcy in January 2009 -- one of the 10 largest US Chapter 11 cases in history at the time. Access and the lenders restructured it and the company emerged from bankruptcy in April 2010 debt-light and with modernized assets, just as commodity chemical margins were recovering. The result was one of the most profitable chemical companies of the 2010s: LyondellBasell generated more cumulative free cash flow in the decade after its bankruptcy than before, and the bankruptcy reorganization effectively gave it a structural cost advantage over competitors who carried heavier legacy debt.
